(2/7/09) ECE Position - Candidate Visit

Hi all,

As you may know, we are in the midst of a search for a faculty
position in Early Childhood Education in our department. Our first
candidate will be visiting the department on Feb. 10th and 11th. On
Feb. 10th we have scheduled a half hour from 11-11:30 am for the
candidate to meet with graduate students. I am writing to invite you
to attend that meeting (which will be held in the connector), as well
as the colloquium that will be held from 3-4:15 pm in the EP library
(and the reception that follows).

Christine McWayne (see bio below) will be presenting a colloquium
titled "Partnership-Based Research in Early Childhood Communities:
Investigating Strengths in Context", from 3:00 - 4:15 p.m., on
February 10th, 2009, at the Eliot Pearson Department of Child
Development.

Christine McWayne, Ph.D. is currently on the faculty in the Steinhardt
School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, New York
University. She is an applied developmental psychologist and a
community-based researcher whose work has centered on understanding
the individual and contextual factors associated with low-income,
urban-residing children's early school success. Prof. McWayne has a
well-funded research program, which addresses three broad questions:
(1) How do preschool children's skills operate together across
developmental domains to promote learning? (2) How do families support
their preschool children's early education and development? (3) How
might broader contexts, such as neighborhoods and interagency
collaboration also impact children's early education and development?

Prof. McWayne has a strong record of collaboration with community
organizations, beginning with her dissertation research conducted in
partnership with Head Start programs. She was the first graduate
student in Philadelphia to be invited by parents to be a Community
Representative to the Head Start Parent Policy Council (School
District of Philadelphia's 7,000 family Head Start program). In her
work at NYU, she continues her research collaborations with Head Start
programs and families through grants from the National Institutes of
Health (parent derived measures of parenting and family involvement in
education) and the Administration for Children and Families (on school
readiness among a nationally representative sample of Head Start
children).

Pantoliano makes his documentary directorial debut with No Kidding, Me
Too! as part of his fight against the stigma and shame of mental/brain
disease. It's an educational, provocative, inspiring, hopeful and
sometimes even humorous look at mental illness and recovery.

No Kidding, Me Too! includes the emotional stories of people from all
walks of life, all affected by different mental health conditions.
Among the many fascinating scenes in the film include Pantoliano's
exploration of the brain dissection research being performed at the
Harvard Brain Bank.

During the filming of a group discussion with mental health
professionals and patients filmed in a stable, a horse watches the
session and shakes his head and snorts. That's the kind of zany twist
you have to expect from Joe Pantoliano, aka "Joey Pants."

Dear Students:

Brrr... it's January and the snow and weather are clear reminders.
Just around the corner, though, will be spring and the time when
applicants to whom we have offered admission will make decisions about
whether to come to Eliot-Pearson.

I write to ask for your help in the admissions process. Each year we
need current students to help recruit applicants whom we have
accepted. If you volunteer to help, we will send you the names of one
or two students in a few weeks, and ask you to contact them. We will
provide some simple suggestions of what you might discuss with them.
Essentially we ask that you call the applicant(s) to congratulate them
on the offer of admission and to answer questions s/he may have and
share information about the Department, faculty and your experience
here so that s/he can make fully informed decisions.

We have a strong graduate student community here and your involvement
in these calls can convey that to applicants.

teachers' beliefs regarding classroom management practices and their

A Guide to Executive Function: Facts and Solutions

Wednesday, March 25, 2009, 7:00-8:30 pm

LOCATION: ELIOT-PEARSON, CURRICULUM LAB

Executive Function is a term used to describe a set of higher order
thinking and reasoning skills which are responsible for: Planning &
Organizing (completing and turning in assignments, juggling
schedules), Impulse Control (taking turns, interrupting others, paying
attention, running off), Cognitive Flexibility (adapting to new
situations, transitions, handling frustrations), Initiation (starting
homework, chores, and major projects), Working Memory (following
directions, note-taking, reading and retaining info), Self-monitoring
(making careless errors, staying on topic, getting into trouble but
not understanding why). This workshop will address strategies to
promote Executive Function in children struggling with this issue.

Presenter: Kalyani Krishnan, M.A., Language and Learning Specialist,

Institute for Learning and Development, Lexington, MA- Kalyani is a
Language and Learning Specialist at ILD. Kalyani specializes in
understanding the processing strengths and weaknesses of individuals
and coordinates evaluations.
