It has come to the attention of some faculty members that several
recently graduating MA and PhD students in our Department have
received an email from a German publishing house inviting them to
publish their dissertation or thesis. The faculty members and former
students who have looked into this invitation have learned that this
email is a "vanity press" solicitation. A blanket invitation is sent
to all people who complete their thesis or dissertation, low cost/low
quality publication of the piece is provided to people who agree to
publish their work, and then the publisher approaches relatives and
friends to buy the book at an exorbitant price. My colleagues and I
want to bring these concerns to your attention should you receive such
an invitation now or in the future.
