In Massachusetts, an estimated 70% of the nearly 150,000 children and
adolescents who need mental health services do not receive them. Families
seeking access to mental health services for preventive care and early
identification face long waits in a complicated and fragmented system. Many
parents experience that schools lack information and training to address the
mental health needs of their children. To address these challenges,
Children's Hospital Boston (Children's) and Massachusetts Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Children (MSPCC) have collaborated with Health
Care For All, Health Law Advocates, Inc., and the Parent/Professional
Advocacy League to launch the long-term Children's Mental Health Campaign
calling for major reform of the state's mental health care system for
children. This campaign is working toward passing legislative remedies
while also working with state administrative offices and with private payers
to reach the goal of an integrated mental health care system for all
children needing care.
