(9/19/07) Research grant opportunity from the PTA

Research Grants - Call for Proposals
The National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) invites grant
proposals for original research and
writing on the organization?s policies concerning the education and/
or welfare of children in the
United States. PTA will award two (2) fellowships for research
grants of $5,000 each.
For more than a century, PTA has provided families with support,
information, and resources
focused on the health and education of children. Founded in 1897 in
Washington DC as the
National Congress of Mothers, PTA was created to meet a profound
challenge: to improve the lives
of all children. Over the past 110 years, PTA has played a central
role in ensuring kindergarten
classes are available to all children and creating child labor laws,
hot lunch programs, a juvenile
justice system, and mandatory immunizations for children.
Fellows will produce original scholarly research which may appear in
dissertation, journal article,
book, or book chapter. Topics may cover a wide range of policy-
related issues that include but are
not limited to: student achievement and assessment; student and
parental attitudes; parent
involvement; contextual factors (individual, curricular, and school
related) in education; educational
participation and persistence (kindergarten through career entry);
at-risk students; early childhood
education; school finance; support for public education; child
health; child welfare; the role of mass
media; and child advocacy.
The primary source for fellows? research will be PTA?s archives held
at the PTA headquarters in
Chicago, Illinois and at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
However, fellows will be provided with
digital copies of all minutes for meetings of the Board of Directors
and minutes of all national
conventions from 1897 through 2006 and convention proceedings from
1925 through 1973, the
period in which such records were kept. Further, fellows will be
provided with digital copies of all
issues of the PTA magazine (currently published under the name Our
Children) from 1906 through
2006. Travel to Chicago is not required and may not be necessary.
PTA?s policy actions are governed by resolutions adopted by the
membership at its annual national
convention, as well as positions taken by the Board of Directors.
National PTA Resolutions and
Position Statements are official documents outlining the opinion,
will, or intent of the association to
address national problems, situations, or concerns that affect
children and youth and require
national action to seek resolution on the issue. Since 1897, PTA has
adopted nearly 1,000
resolutions and position statements on a wide variety of national
education, health, and safety
issues. These resolutions and position statements are detailed
within the official minutes of each
convention and meeting of the Board.
Deliverables
Fellows will be required to submit brief (maximum 3 pages) progress
reports in June and
December 2008. Publication of research is not required during the
fellowship period, however
fellows are asked to provide PTA with a copy of any publication
resulting from research conducted
as a result of the grant. PTA, in consultation and coordination with
the fellow, may publish the
piece or excerpts in the PTA magazine, on its website, in other PTA
publications, or in coordination
with a third-party. Fellows will give credit to the grant program in
any publication resulting from
research conducted as a result of the grant.
Doctoral Candidates
Applicants may be doctoral candidates at an accredited graduate
school within the United States.
Fellowships may be used to finance the research and writing of
applicant?s dissertation. The
fellowships are not intended to finance the completion of doctoral
coursework. All such applicants
must document that they will have completed all pre-dissertation
requirements by January 1, 2008.
Applicants must additionally provide a substantive letter of support
from applicant's faculty
dissertation advisor that includes an indication of the student's
current progress toward the degree
and expected date of completion.
Application Requirements
All applications for grants must include:
1. PTA Fellowship Cover Sheet. Provide requested contact information
and an abstract of your
proposed research and writing (maximum 250 words). Cover sheets may
be downloaded at
_http://www.pta.org/fellowship_ (http://www.pta.org/fellowship) .
2. Research proposal (limited to 4 single-spaced pages, 12 point

(9/17/07) Child Dev. Progress Reports

(Note to Graduate Students: This note is meant for continuing
graduate students, not those of you who were admitted into the
program in 2007. You can look forward to documenting your progress
next year!)

Dear EP Continuing Graduate Students,

I hope you're settling into the semester and ready for the exciting
challenges ahead! The beginning of the academic year always brings a
sense of anticipation as new students join our community. The reason
that you are receiving this note is that you are NOT a new student,
but a continuing (or advanced!) student. It's time for us to conduct
our annual review of the graduate program, and of student progress in
the program. In the next couple of days, you will find in your EP
mailbox a form to complete that documents your progress in the
program (e.g., completion of required courses, internships, etc.).
Please take a moment (it won't take long) to complete the document,
attach a copy of your course transcript (the unofficial copy from SIS
Online is just fine), and forward it to your advisor. Your advisor
will comment and forward it to the Graduate Programs Committee for
faculty review.

Deadline to forward document to advisor: September 24.

Best wishes,

Ann Easterbrooks
Director of Graduate Studies

Please do not respond to this email address. Find an address below.

2) Fall Grants-In-Aid Program: Grants-in-Aid (GIA) support scientific
research in social problem areas
related to the basic interests and goals of SPSSI and particularly
those that are not likely to receive support from traditional
sources. Funding up to $1000 is available for graduate student
research, with strong preference given to applications from students
at the dissertation stage of the graduate career. Funding up to $2000
is available for research by SPSSI members who already have a PhD.
The Committee especially encourages proposals involving (a) unique
and timely research opportunities, (b) underrepresented institutions,
graduate students, and junior scholars, (c) volunteer research teams,
and (d) actual, not pilot, projects. The applicant must be a member
of SPSSI. More information can be found at www.spssi.org/

3) Fall Clara Mayo Grants Program:
The Clara Mayo Grant program supports masters' theses or pre-
dissertation research on aspects of sexism, racism, or prejudice,
with preference given to students enrolled in a terminal master's
program. Studies of the application of theory or the design of
interventions or treatments to address these problems are welcomed.
SPSSI members who have matriculated in graduate programs in psychology,
applied social science, and related disciplines are encouraged to
apply. Up to four grants, each up to $1000, are awarded annually. For
more information go to www.spssi.org/Mayoflyer.html <http://

4) 2008 Dalmas Taylor Public Policy Internship:
Our 2007 Dalmas Taylor intern, Besangie Sellars, a doctoral student
at the University of Michigan, has recently finished an eight week
internship in Washington working with SPSSI and APA. Her work focused
on the development of policy fact sheets and preparation of summaries
of legislative initiatives, and she had the opportunity to gain some
first-hand experience in the policy processes on Capitol Hill. To learn
more about 2008 internship opportunities for yourself or one of your
students, go to http://www.spssi.org/Taylor_flyer.html.

9 Hosmer Street
Belmont, MA

Hosted by Kathleen Camara

RSVP by 9/12 to Rita Bartolomeu at rita.bartolomeu@tufts.edu

Directions: Coming from Tufts - EP Parking Lot

Turn right at end of parking lot driveway. At top of hill (just over
bridge) at the set of lights, take a right. Follow Boston Avenue
until you come to the intersection of Route 16. Take a left onto
16. Follow Route 16 (Alewife Brook Parkway) to Route 2 west. Stay
on Route 2 west all the way toward Acton. When you come to lights
at a major intersection of Route 2 and 2A, take a left staying on
Route 2 west. Continue on Route 2 west. Eventually you will come
to the Concord Rotary. Take the 3rd exit off the rotary, staying on
Route 2 west. At 1.2 miles from the rotary, take a right onto
Hosmer Street. (The street appears suddenly on your right, so slow
down and be in the right lane ready to turn!) If you miss the turn
there are lights up ahead and you can turn back around, go back to
the rotary and try again! Follow Hosmer Street almost to the end of
the road. The house, located at #9 Hosmer is on the left about 4
